Best Wood Flooring For Your Budget
Hardwood Floors are a coveted flooring to have in your home. For many, they believe custom hardwood flooring that is high quality is just out of their budget. Getting a great looking floor that’s reasonable is possible, especially now that engineered flooring is an option. There are ways to get the price down on hardwood floors and it still look fantastic. Here’s some tips on how:
When selecting a hardwood flooring, there are a few factors that play into the price shooting up.
Type of wood.
Width of each plank.
Add-ons such as water popping, hand scraped, and extra coating for protection.
Types of Wood
Wood types vary from really exotic, such as Koa wood, Zebra wood, Brazilian Cherry, and Walnut which all produce very unique looking floors- some which aren’t very popular but look very beautiful and luxurious when done right. Then on the more budget friendly side there are options like European French White Oak or White Oak. On the cheaper end there’s pine which has a very specific look and isn’t very versatile. When selecting the type of wood, you want to go with something that is durable, versatile and also easy on the wallet. European White Oak is all of those along with having a very luxurious look and feel. You can chose between different grades like Select which has very little knots and mineral streaks to character grade which is full of all the natural characteristics of the wood. Select grade being more on the costly side, but still within reason and character being most reasonably priced.
Width of Planks
For some this isn’t important and if you’re wanting a natural looking floor with nothing being too fancy or trendy, going with a width of 5”-7.5” is highly recommended. If you go smaller than that (2-4”) the floor can look busy and you can end up paying more in labor costs getting your flooring installed. For a big and luxurious feel you’ll want to go with wider planks, which also makes the price increase, 8.5” to 16” is considerably wide but can give your home an extremely high end feel. If your budget allows, the wider planks are something that you can do with European White Oak which allows you to have a great looking floor without paying for an extremely high-end wood.
Add-Ons
This is where you can get really custom with your flooring. Many people on a budget don’t add these things into their order of flooring, but some can add a uniqueness that only you will have, water-popping being one of them. Water-popping is a process that is very specific and has to be done correctly, it opens up the grain of the wood after sanding which allows darker colors to penetrate deeper and creating a rich dark color. Not everyone wants a dark wood floor, so if you don’t, skip the water-popping process. Hand-scraped is a very expensive add on and is not done with engineered wood flooring but only with solid hardwood floor. Hand-scraped wood flooring is a very intense look that is luxurious and custom, has to be done right and goes more with a high end country home. The add-on that we truly recommend to every client is an added top seal coat to protect your wood floor from sun damage. This is something that can be a great investment when getting hardwood floors into your home so that they will last a long time.
